Pre-k Literacy Skills
- Children just entering pre-k school should be learning the culture behind reading.
- This means that children between ages 3-4 should be learning these skills:
1. How to hold books properly while reading.
2. How they use their fingers to trace over the words they are reading.
3. Proper direction for reading (left to right).
4. Children should learn how to have conversations about books
- How does this look and feel?
1. Students should have an interactive and diverse selection of books.
2. Teachers/parents/guardians should read all books aloud to children while tracing over words they are reading.
3. After each book, teachers/parents/guardians should lead conversations about why it was written, lessons that can be learned from the story, and how the book/story made them feel.
- Types of text:
1. songs
2. chants
3. structured reading passages
These will expose children to the idea that letters make sounds, and when letters come together, they make words that have meaning.
- If you are a high school or middle school teacher and know your students are reading at a pre-k level, you should use a program called "Phonics for Reading."
- If you are an elementary school teacher, you could use a program called "Magnetic Reading Foundations."
